On Monday, the BCCI appointed three different leaders for four upcoming assignments across formats, including the three-match T20I series against India in New Zealand. All-rounder Hardik Pandya was chosen as the captain.
On November 18, four days after the World Cup in Australia, the T20I series will start in Wellington. The ODI series in New Zealand, which begins November 25 in Auckland, will be led by veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan. In both of the New Zealand series, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will serve as the team's vice captain.
As part of "workload management of players," the regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Dinesh Karthik, and Ravichandran Ashwin have been rested for the New Zealand tour.
To lead the team for the ODI and Test series in Bangladesh, Rohit will be returning. For the Bangladesh tour, where India will play three one-day internationals and two tests starting on December 4, Kohli (both ODI and Test) and Ashwin (only Test) will also be back in the team.
All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will play against Bangladesh after missing the T20 World Cup due to a knee injury suffered during the Asia Cup. Chetan Sharma, the chairman of the selection committee, claimed that various teams had been chosen to control the players' workload.
“Nobody asked for rest. All the decisions are part of workload management of players. We have reports from the medical team on who to give rest when and how to manage them,” Chetan said during a virtual interaction.
Because he has not yet fully recovered from his injury and the selectors are not in the mood to rush his return, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who was forced to withdraw from the T20 World Cup owing to a stress fracture in his back, was not chosen for the two tours.
