Virat Kohli, senior Indian batsman, on Sunday added another feather to his already impressive cap during a T20 World Cup Super 12 match against South Africa at Perth Stadium.

During the game, he reached 1000 runs for his career and became the second batter in the history of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

Prior to the World T20 match against South Africa, Kohli had 989 runs from 21 innings. He came in to bat after South Africa speedster Lungi Ngidi sent India skipper Rohit Sharma packing in the fifth over.

In response to Ngidi, Kohli unleashed two exquisite shots: a lovely cover drive and a whip off the legs through midwicket. His second boundary raised his score to 12 and rewarded him with the 1000-run milestone in T20 world cups.

However, Kohli's time on the field was brief when he was defeated by a short ball from Ngidi. As a result, the former India captain was given out for the first time at the current T20 World Cup.

The top batter has now scored 12 fifty-plus scores and totalled 1001 runs from 22 innings at an average of 83.41 and a strike rate of 131.71. He joined former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene in the exclusive group of players with 1,000 runs scored in T20 World Cup games.

From 2007 to 2014, Jayawardene accumulated 1016 runs in 31 innings while pitching at 39.07. The top-ranked Indian hitter is only 16 runs away from passing Jayawardene for the record for most runs scored in T20 World Cups.

The Delhi-born batsman is playing in his fifth T20 World Cup game and has been in outstanding form. With a spectacular unbeaten 82 against Pakistan in Melbourne, Kohli gave India a thrilling victory in a 160-run chase. He added a 44-ball 62, consisting of three boundaries and two sixes, to his impressive run against the Dutch.

In spite of some outstanding speed bowling from the Proteas, Surya Kumar Yadav's magnificent 40-ball 68 helped India reach 133/9 despite the fact that he could only manage 12 against South Africa. In response, the Indians' excellent swing bowling rocked the South Africans, who were at 40/3 off 10 overs at the time of publishing.

In the 2012 game in Sri Lanka, he made his debut for India in the T20 World Cup. His best performance in this competition came in 2016, when he scored 273 runs in five games, averaging 136.50.
