Jedi Trump: Vows to Make Hollywood Great Again (Lightsaber Glitch Aside!)

image

On Star Wars Day, May 4, 2025, the White House sparked a buzz by sharing an AI-generated image of Donald Trump as a muscular Jedi warrior, aiming to portray him as a heroic figure fighting against his political rivals, whom the post labeled as “Sith Lords” and villains. The caption read, “Happy May the 4th to all, including the Radical Left Lunatics. You’re not the Rebellion-you’re the Empire. May the 4th be with you, recalling a moment political contrast between Trump's opponents and the dark side of the Force from Star Wars.

But the image was marred by a razor-sharp mistake: Trump had been photographed wielding a red lightsaber, a hue traditionally associated with the Sith Lords-the villains of the Star Wars franchise-instead of the blue or green lightsabers wielded by the heroic Jedi. This was no loss to fans and commentators, however, who noted the ironic incompatibility because the red saber had already unambiguously demonstrated Trump as a bad guy instead of a good guy.

The red prompted general ridicule and contempt on social media, with commentators referencing the use of symbolic meaning of color lightsabers throughout the franchise.

This Star Wars Day tweet was matched by a similarly bad-taste AI-generated image of Trump wearing the Pope's hat, also criticized for bad taste.

Apart from these social media stunts, Trump proposed a suggested 100% tariff on all foreign-produced movies as a national security action to "make Hollywood great again" by keeping home filmmaking afloat.

In spite of the lightsaber "niggle," the White House's AI-created imagery is a daring, if sometimes awkward, effort to merge pop culture and political messaging.

The Trump Jedi photo reduces this marriage of spectacle and controversy to the ways symbolism and fan recognition can influence public opinion in the age of the digital.
