New York, 27 June 2025:

After shocking political insiders and attracting harsh criticism from former US President Donald Trump, Zohran Madani, a 33 year old democratic socialist and member of the New York State Assembly, emerged as the presumed winner of the New York City Democratic mayoral primary.

With roughly 43.5 percent of the first round votes as of late Wednesday night, Mamdani was well ahead of front runner Andrew Cuomo, who received 36.4 percent . Cuomo has already given up the race, but the ranked choice counting is still ongoing.

The overtly progressive candidate ran on a platform of bold policies that appeal to younger and left leaning voters, including free public transportation, rent freezes, city run grocery stores, significant investment in trans health care, and higher taxes on the wealthy. Trump responded to Mamdani's surge with a harsh statement on Truth Social, calling the candidate a "100 percent communist lunatic" and stating that "our country is screwed" under such leadership. The populist fervor is evident in Mamdani's platform. Following early calls to defund the force, he has somewhat moderated his position and declared himself “Donald Trump’s worst nightmare” while promising to cooperate with law enforcement. Notably, he and Cuomo got into a heated argument during which he made fun of his opponent:

“To Mr Cuomo, I have never had to resign in disgrace,” referencing Cuomo’s resignation amid misconduct allegations .

In reaction to the party's recent defeats, the primary upset indicates a change in the Democratic electorate. Prominent progressives like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders supported Mamdani and commended his grassroots approach. However, business executives have voiced their concerns. "It would be disastrous for the city," said John Borthwick, CEO of tech incubator Betaworks, who also cautioned that Mamdani lacks experience managing a complex metropolis.

With incumbent Mayor Eric Adams running as an independent, former Governor Cuomo considering an independent run, and Republican Curtis Sliwa on the ballot, Mamdani is expected to face an unusual general election. With its emphasis on affordability, justice, and working class representation, Mamdani's campaign has sparked excitement despite the anticipated criticism.

Whether he can convert primary success into a citywide victory will depend on whether his message reaches beyond the Democratic base.
