Colonel Sofia Qureshi has emerged as the iconic face of India. A symbol of women power and nationalism.
Colonel Sofia Qureshi, one of the two women officers who briefed the media after India’s execution of Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, May 7 , 2025 joined the Indian Army Corps of Signals in 1999 and rose to prominence in 2016 as the first woman officer to lead a multinational military exercise.
She has appeared in other press conferences too to brief nation on progress in operation Sindoor against Pakistan backed terrorism along with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.
She is an iconic woman.
Born in 1974 to a military family in Gujarat’s Vadodara, Col Quraishi graduated with a master’s in Biochemistry from Maharaja Sayajirao University in 1997. Her grandfather was a religious teacher in the army, a statement issued by the Gujarat government said.
Currently an officer in the Mechanised Infantry of the Indian army, along with her husband, Col Qureshi was the first Indian woman officer to lead an Indian contingent and the only woman commander among 18 participating nations at the ASEAN Plus Multinational Military Exercise ‘Force 18’ in 2016.
Operation Parakram
Col Quraishi played a pivotal role during Operation Parakram along the Punjab border that had followed the Indian Parliament attack in December 2001. She earned a Commendation Card from the general officer commanding-in-chief (GOC-in-C) for her exemplary service.
She has emerged as face of India saluted by one and all.
Also , Qureshi's husband Colonel Tajuddin Bagewadi is from Konnur town in Gokak taluk. He has been serving as a colonel in the Indian Army. They were married in 2015. Qureshi is a native of Baroda in Gujarat, being married to Tajuddin has made her the daughter in law of Belagavi.
Colonel Qureshi, who has already inspired crores of youngsters in India, was also praised by the Supreme Court. In 2020, the apex court acknowledged the achievements of Colonel Qureshi while ruling in favour of granting Permanent Commission to women officers in the Indian Army.
