PM to Inaugurate Vizhinjam Port, Kerala Set to Anchor Global Shipping Spotlight

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating the Vizhinjam International Seaport along the coast of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on May 2, 2025, which will be a historic milestone in the maritime infrastructure of India.

Vizhinjam is India's first semi-automatic deep-water international container transshipment port, established through a public-private partnership involving the Kerala state government, the Centre, and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. The port, constructed at a cost estimated at about ₹8,867 crore, makes Kerala a key nodal point along international shipping channels and sharply curtails India's reliance on international transshipment points such as Dubai and Colombo.

Strategically placed within 10 nautical miles of international shipping routes, Vizhinjam enjoys a natural depth of almost 20 meters, enabling it to accommodate the world's largest container ships without having to dredge at an additional expense. With the latest technology such as AI-driven vessel traffic management created in partnership with IIT Madras, the port is more efficient, safer, and quicker.

Since commencing trial operations in July 2024, Vizhinjam has served more than 285 ships and over 5.9 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), already outpacing a number of its global rivals.

The commissioning of the port is likely to make India a key transshipment center in South Asia, setting up a hub-and-spoke system wherein containers coming to India will be clustered at Vizhinjam and redistributed to other ports through feeder ships. This will increase efficiency in cargo handling and lower Indian exporters' and importers' logistics costs.

Vizhinjam is also a major employment driver for Kerala, with the majority of the jobs generated going to local citizens.

Multimodal connectivity to the port is provided by road connectivity to National Highway 66, construction in progress for connecting to the national network by rail, and nearness to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport to provide smooth interface with inland and international transport.

In integrating Vizhinjam with Mediterranean Shipping Company's elite Jade Service route that unites Asia with Europe through South Africa, the port becomes destined to match behemoth world class hubs like Singapore, Shanghai, and Busan.

This unveiling by PM Modi will mark the occasion to cherish this engineering as well as strategic feat while paving the way towards a new decade for Kerala as well as India in maritime business across the globe.
