Around 170 sheep were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, triggering concern among residents and prompting Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to order an immediate probe into the incident.
The deaths were reported from the area around Rashtriya Prerna Sthal under the Madiaon police station limits. According to preliminary information, the sheep died suddenly within a short span of time, raising questions over possible poisoning, disease, or negligence. Police officials have sent samples for post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Charu Khare, founder of the NGO Aasra The Helping Hands Trust, submitted a written application to the Madiaon police station stating that the sheep deaths occurred a few days after an event was held in the area. She said it is not yet clear whether the animals consumed waste material left behind after the event or were deliberately poisoned by unknown persons.
Calling the incident “serious and sensitive,” Khare demanded a thorough investigation. She stressed that post-mortem reports are crucial to determine the real reason behind the deaths and added that if poisoning or administrative laxity is confirmed, strict action should be taken against those responsible. The NGO, she said, is ready to extend all possible support to the authorities during the investigation.
Madiaon Station House Officer Shivanand Mishra confirmed that samples from the dead sheep have been sent for testing and that further action will be taken based on the reports.
Taking cognisance of the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to conduct a detailed probe and submit a report at the earliest. The Uttar Pradesh government also announced compensation of ₹10,000 per sheep for the affected owners.
Authorities are currently examining all angles, including animal cruelty, poisoning, and health-related causes, as the investigation continues.
