The Indian government has reaffirmed that the Aadhaar database remains secure, with no reported breaches to date. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) highlighted that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) employs a multi-layered “defence-in-depth” security system to protect personal data.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry confirmed that advanced encryption technologies are used whenever data is stored or transmitted, ensuring that citizens’ private information stays protected from unauthorized access. Regular audits and security checks are conducted to maintain the integrity of the system.
Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, shared these details in the Lok Sabha on December 17. He emphasized that UIDAI’s security measures have received top international certifications, including ISO 27001:2022 for Information Security Management and ISO/IEC 27701:2019 for Privacy Information Management. Additionally, the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) provides ongoing guidance to uphold cybersecurity standards.
The system is also tested regularly by independent agencies using Static Application Security Testing (SAST) and Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST) to identify and resolve potential vulnerabilities.
Aadhaar, the world’s largest biometric identity system, currently serves over 134 crore active users and has completed more than 16,000 crore identity verifications successfully. The government reiterated that all steps are in place to keep the database modern, robust, and resilient against any cyber threats.
This assurance comes amid growing concerns over data privacy and security in India, underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding citizen information.
