After SC Orders CBI Probe, Vijay Faces Key Political Test Ahead of 2026 Tamil Nadu Polls

The Supreme Court’s decision to transfer the Karur rally stampede case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has thrown actor-turned-politician Vijay back into the political spotlight ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The tragedy on September 27, which claimed 41 lives including women and children during a public event organized by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has reshaped the state’s political equations.

Several BJP and AIADMK leaders welcomed the court’s verdict, calling it an opportunity to uncover the truth behind the incident. They also viewed it as a chance to bring Vijay closer to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold. The DMK, however, sees the development as a move by the Centre to court Vijay and influence Tamil Nadu’s political landscape ahead of the polls.

Despite the shifting alliances and speculation, Vijay’s inner circle maintains that he has no plans to align with any major political party. His team insists the focus remains on ensuring justice for the victims of the Karur tragedy rather than political negotiations. However, analysts believe the situation may lead Vijay to adopt a softer stance towards both the BJP and the AIADMK, even if he chooses to go solo in the elections.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami has already hinted at the possibility of a broader opposition alliance to challenge the ruling DMK. In recent rallies, AIADMK leaders have expressed openness to working with TVK. Before the AIADMK renewed its alliance with the BJP in April, the party had explored bringing Vijay into its camp, but talks reportedly collapsed over power-sharing terms, including Vijay’s demand for the chief minister’s post for part of the term.

While Vijay has been outspoken against both the DMK and the BJP, he has refrained from directly targeting Palaniswami, calling the AIADMK “opportunistic” in the past but maintaining diplomatic distance since. Political observers say his calculated silence suggests he is weighing his options carefully, possibly positioning himself as the principal face of the anti-DMK front without formal alliances.

For now, Vijay stands at a crossroads  courted by both national and regional players, yet determined to preserve his independent political identity. The SC’s CBI verdict may have cleared him of blame in the stampede, but it has also intensified the political attention on one of Tamil Nadu’s most watched new contenders for power.
