KOLKATA: A swift and selfless act by an Indian Army jawan turned into a life-saving intervention aboard a speeding train on Saturday. An ambulance assistant of the Army, Sepoy Sunil, administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to an eight-month-old infant on board the New Delhi–Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, saving the child’s life, a Defence official said.

According to the official, Sepoy Sunil, who serves at a field hospital in India’s north-east, was returning to duty after his leave when the incident occurred. Hearing distress calls from the infant’s family, he immediately stepped in to assist. With no medical support available on the train, Sunil performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions until the child began breathing again.

“His timely and professional action prevented a fatality in a situation where no immediate medical support was available,” the Defence official stated. The infant was later handed over to medical personnel at the next major station for further observation and treatment.

Army officials lauded the jawan’s prompt response and presence of mind, describing his actions as a reflection of the Army’s core values of service, dedication, and compassion. The Defence Ministry is likely to formally recognise his act of bravery and professionalism.

The incident has since drawn widespread appreciation on social media, with many users praising the soldier for exemplifying courage and humanity beyond the call of duty.
