Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly defended senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, saying the legendary duo owes no proof to anyone after years of unmatched service to Indian cricket. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin slammed critics who questioned their future after both players announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this year.
Ashwin highlighted their phenomenal recent form, noting that Kohli smashed 302 runs including two centuries in the ODI series against South Africa, earning the Player of the Series award. Rohit, meanwhile, was adjudged Player of the Series in India’s previous ODI contest against Australia, where he scored a century and a fifty. According to Ashwin, these performances show the level of commitment and discipline the two veterans still bring to the game.
He stressed that it is “laughable” to expect players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature to continually prove themselves, saying their long careers naturally include highs and lows. What stands out, he added, is the way both cricketers continue to make sacrifices and push their limits to extend their international careers. Their decision to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai and Delhi further reflects their hunger and dedication.
Ashwin also delivered a strong message for young cricketers, calling Rohit and Kohli’s work ethic a “massive learning.” He reminded fans and critics that the sport is always bigger than any individual, and longevity requires unwavering commitment.
With the South Africa series marking their final international assignment of 2025, Kohli finished as India’s top ODI run-scorer of the year for a record ninth time. Both stars will next be seen in action during India’s three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11.
