The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to take an “unusual” and more detailed review of the Indian Under-19 team’s performance following their crushing defeat to Pakistan in the U-19 Asia Cup final. Despite reaching the summit clash unbeaten, the Ayush Mhatre-led side suffered a massive 191-run loss, raising concerns within the cricket board.
India’s campaign ended on a disappointing note after Pakistan piled up a formidable 347/8 in the final. Pakistan batter Sameer Minhas was the standout performer, smashing a brilliant 172 off 113 balls, laced with 17 fours and nine sixes. India’s bowling attack struggled to contain the scoring, allowing Pakistan to completely dominate the contest.
Chasing the huge target, India never really got going. Pakistan’s pace attack, led by Ali Reza (4/42), Mohammad Sayyam (2/38), and Abdul Subhan (2/29), applied relentless pressure with disciplined hard-length bowling. The Indian batting lineup collapsed for 156 in just 26.2 overs. Tournament star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who had announced himself with a stunning 171 earlier in the competition, managed only 26 in the final, while Chennai Super Kings youngster Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for just two runs.
According to reports, the decision to conduct an expanded review was taken during an online BCCI Apex Council meeting on December 22. While post-tournament reports are routine, the board now intends to go beyond the standard process by holding direct discussions with head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre to seek explanations on team performance and preparation.
The final also witnessed heated exchanges between players from both sides, and it remains unclear whether player conduct will be included in the review. With the Under-19 World Cup scheduled for January–February 2026, the BCCI’s move signals a firm intent to address shortcomings and ensure better preparedness for the global event.
