Bihar will set up one hundred fast track courts to speed up the disposal of long pending criminal cases, Home Minister Samrat Choudhary announced in Patna on Sunday.
Choudhary said the decision was taken after a review of the state’s judicial load, which showed that more than eighteen lakh cases are currently pending across various courts. He noted that the creation of a dedicated set of fast track courts would help ease pressure on regular courts and allow them to focus on sensitive matters that require closer attention.
The Home Minister said the new courts are intended to bring efficiency to the justice delivery system and ensure that cases do not remain unresolved for long periods. He added that quick and fair hearings are essential for public trust in the system. Officials said the plan will include the identification of suitable locations, the appointment of judicial officers and support staff, and the strengthening of related infrastructure. The government believes that the move will help clear case backlogs that have grown over the years and improve the overall pace of judicial proceedings.
Choudhary said the state is committed to reforms that make justice more accessible and timely, and he emphasised that reducing pendency is a priority for the administration.
