Panic swept across Chandigarh and neighbouring Mohali on Tuesday morning after at least ten schools received bomb threat calls, prompting authorities to suspend classes and evacuate students as a precautionary measure.
Police teams and emergency response units were immediately deployed to the affected campuses. Students who had already reached school were sent back home, while buses en route were turned around mid-journey. In several cases, parents received urgent messages from school administrations informing them about the security threat and requesting them to collect their children from designated stops.
One school, in its advisory to parents, said the decision to suspend classes was taken “out of an abundance of caution,” emphasising that student and staff safety remained the highest priority. Authorities initiated thorough searches of school premises following standard security protocols. Bomb disposal squads and local police personnel combed the campuses, though no suspicious objects had been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
The incident comes just a day after multiple schools in Delhi received similar bomb threats via email, triggering evacuations and extensive security checks in the national capital. Over the past year, Delhi schools have witnessed a surge in such hoax threats, with authorities reporting hundreds of similar incidents in 2024 alone.
Officials said that while many past threats have turned out to be false alarms, strict procedures are followed each time to ensure no risk is overlooked. The recent pattern of threats across cities has raised concerns among parents and school authorities alike.
Investigations are underway to trace the origin of the calls in Chandigarh and Mohali. Police are examining technical details and coordinating with cyber teams to identify those responsible. Meanwhile, schools have assured parents that classes will resume only after a complete security clearance from authorities.
