Can Kohli Reach Sachin’s 100-Century Record?

It’s a dream run for Virat Kohli two centuries and two half-centuries in his last four matches. Kohli now has 84 ODI hundreds, already surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s tally in ODIs. But Sachin still holds the all-format record with 100 international centuries. Can the ‘King’ reach the ‘God of Cricket’s’ iconic milestone? Sunil Gavaskar has shared his thoughts.

From one era to another, India’s cricketing legacy has passed smoothly from Gavaskar to Tendulkar to Kohli bringing records and trophies along the way. With two centuries in the first two ODIs against South Africa, Kohli stands at 84 international tons.

Gavaskar believes the record is within reach: “Why can’t he break it? If Kohli plays another three years, scoring 16 more centuries isn’t impossible. He scored two hundreds in three matches. If he gets two more in the New Zealand series, he’ll reach 86. That brings him much closer to 100.”

He added that Kohli looked in superb touch: “Even with the match in India’s pocket, he kept batting brilliantly. The openers set it up, and Kohli enjoyed his batting. We haven’t seen him play ODIs in this T20-like mode.”

India will play more than 30 ODIs before the next World Cup. Scoring 16 tons is tough but is it really impossible for Kohli? Gavaskar has already called him the greatest ODI batter of all time.
