Chennai has been placed under a red alert as the remnants of Cyclone Ditwah continue to unleash heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across several districts of Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Chennai and neighbouring Thiruvallur are likely to experience intense downpours, with temperatures hovering around a cool 27°C and minimums near 23°C. The deep depression currently lies close to the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coasts, about 35 km from shore, and is expected to slowly recurve southwestwards before weakening into a depression over the next 12 hours.
Authorities remain on high alert as the weather system continues to bring widespread rainfall. According to the IMD’s weekly forecast, Chennai is likely to observe persistent wet conditions. On December 3, the city is expected to see a heavily clouded sky accompanied by heavy rain. From December 4 to 7, partly cloudy conditions are predicted, but the risk of moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning remains in place. Day temperatures will stay around 29–30°C, with night temperatures between 24–26°C.
As a precautionary step, district administrations in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram have declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on December 2. Officials said the decision was taken to ensure student safety amid the threat of severe rainfall, flooding, and waterlogging. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and follow government and disaster management advisories closely.
Meanwhile, heavy rains have led to disruptions across the region, with emergency teams on standby to handle any eventuality. The government continues to monitor the situation as Cyclone Ditwah’s remnants move closer to the coast, maintaining the potential for further intense showers. Authorities have urged citizens to stay vigilant and updated on weather alerts as conditions evolve.
