Disney and Pixar have officially greenlit the production of "Coco 2," which will be released theatrically in 2029. The sequel to the popular 2017 film "Coco" was confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger at the company's annual shareholder meeting.
The original, which won two Oscars, won over audiences with its touching tale of a young boy named Miguel who travels to the Land of the Dead to discover his family's musical past.
"Coco 2" will also see the return of the original creative team, including director Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina, to maintain continuity in art and storytelling. The sequel will be produced by Mark Nielsen, who worked on "Toy Story 4" and "Inside Out 2."
While particular details of the story are being kept under wraps, Iger was enthusiastic about the project, saying it will be full of humor, heart, and adventure.
The release has received varied reactions from social media users, with many clamoring to go back to the rich world of "Coco" while others wonder why there is a need for a sequel.
The voice of Miguel, Anthony Gonzalez, intimated he would be back, further fueling suspense around the movie. As production goes on, fans should expect more details on the thrilling new installment of the "Coco" franchise.
