SHAHJAHANPUR: A couple was killed and their granddaughter seriously injured when a tractor-trolley carrying bricks ran over them as they slept outside their house on Wednesday night, police said.
The incident occurred on the Puwayan-Nigohi road near Sunara Bujurg village. According to Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi, the tractor-trolley driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle before it veered off the road and ran over the sleeping family. The deceased were identified as Ramshankar, aged 48, and his wife Tarawati, aged 45. Their ten-year-old granddaughter, who was also sleeping nearby, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
“The driver fled the scene after the accident. Efforts are being made to trace and arrest him,” SP Dwivedi said. Police have seized the tractor-trolley and registered a case in connection with the incident. The bodies of the victims were sent for post-mortem examination. Residents of the area expressed shock over the tragedy and urged authorities to ensure stricter enforcement of road safety measures, particularly for heavy vehicles operating at night.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether negligence or mechanical failure led to the accident.
