The historic city of Cuttack is under lockdown and heavy security after communal clashes erupted late Friday night during Durga idol immersion at the Dargah Bazaar area. What began as a dispute over loud music soon turned violent, spreading fear across the city.
According to eyewitnesses, two groups confronted each other after locals objected to high-volume music played during the procession. Within minutes, stones and bottles were thrown, and several shops and vehicles were vandalized.
Police rushed to the spot to control the situation, but the violence quickly spread to nearby areas, including Mangalabag, Purighat, Lalbaug, and Jagatpur. At least 25 people, including police personnel, were injured in the clashes.
To restore order, the district administration imposed a 36 hour curfew across 13 police station limits and suspended internet and social media services for 24 hours to prevent the spread of rumors and provocative messages.
Six people have been arrested so far, and police are reviewing CCTV footage and drone recordings to identify others involved. Officials have warned that strict action will be taken against anyone responsible for the unrest.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi appealed for calm, saying, “Cuttack has always been a city of harmony. Those attempting to disrupt peace will face firm legal action.”
The usually bustling city now lies silent shops shuttered, streets deserted, and schools closed. Only the sound of police sirens echoes through the tense air.
Residents hope that peace will soon return. As one local resident put it, “We want harmony, not fear.”
