CHENNAI: Cyclone Ditwah continued to trigger widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Sunday, leading to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and several incidents of damage. Officials confirmed that three people have died in rain-related incidents since the weather system intensified over the weekend.
According to the meteorological authorities, the cyclone has been moving slowly along the coast, bringing sustained heavy rain and strong winds to multiple districts. Chennai, Cuddalore, Villupuram and the delta region reported intense showers through the day. Puducherry and Karaikal also recorded significant rainfall, prompting emergency teams to remain on alert. State disaster management officials said the three fatalities occurred in separate incidents linked to flooding and structural collapse. Detailed assessments are under way, and compensation procedures will follow standard government guidelines. Power supply interruptions were reported in several localities as strong winds damaged overhead lines, though restoration work has begun.
The continuous rain has caused extensive waterlogging in urban centres, leading to traffic congestion and temporary closure of a few low-lying roads. Municipal bodies in Chennai and other districts deployed additional pumps to clear stagnant water. Schools in several rain-hit districts have been advised to remain closed on Monday as a precaution. Fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea owing to rough conditions and high waves along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts. Port authorities have also issued advisories for vessels to remain docked until conditions improve.
The meteorological department has forecast continued rain for the next two days, with the intensity expected to reduce gradually as Cyclone Ditwah weakens while moving inland.
