Cyclone Ditwah likely after rare Senyar as deep depression forms over Bay of Bengal

A new deep depression forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into Cyclone Ditwah within hours, putting Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and parts of south Andhra Pradesh on alert. This development comes immediately after the formation of the exceptionally rare Cyclone Senyar in the Strait of Malacca, an event weather experts consider historic due to its unusual origin and intensity.

According to the latest updates from the meteorological authorities, the deep depression near the Sri Lanka coast is moving steadily north-northwest at around 8 kmph. The system is currently positioned close to Hambantota and Batticaloa and continues to strengthen as it tracks over the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to become a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours and then approach the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Forecast models indicate that the system will move inland during the next two to three days, bringing sustained periods of heavy rain, strong winds, and rough sea conditions. Several districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Thanjavur, Thiruvallur and Nagapattinam, are already under yellow and orange alerts for November 27 to 29. Authorities have urged fishermen to avoid the sea and coastal residents to remain prepared for potential flooding and disruptions.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Senyar, which developed in the narrow Strait of Malacca, continued moving away from Indian territory and closer to Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. It is being described as one of the rarest cyclonic events recorded in the region, as such storms almost never form in that narrow waterway. The system has brought heavy rain, strong winds and turbulent seas to northern Malaysia and parts of western Indonesia.

With two significant weather systems active in adjoining regions, authorities are monitoring the situation closely and advising people in vulnerable coastal areas to stay alert for further updates.
