Delhi Police to Conduct First-Ever Exam for SHO Appointments

From March 18, the Delhi Police will hold its first-ever merit-based examination for appointing Station House Officers (SHOs). Until now, SHO postings were primarily based on seniority and experience, but this new system aims to bring greater transparency and efficiency to the selection process.

The initiative is primarily focused on Cyber Police Stations, which handle digital crimes in the capital. With 122 police inspectors competing for just 15 positions, the competition is expected to be intense. The exam will be conducted at the Delhi Police Academy in Wazirabad.

Candidates will be tested through multiple-choice and descriptive questions, assessing their knowledge of laws, investigative procedures, and decision-making abilities. The syllabus includes Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Cybercrime and IT laws, the NDPS Act, the POCSO Act, and other critical legal regulations.

Officials believe that this reform will raise policing standards and ensure that only the most competent officers lead investigations. A senior officer remarked that this change was long overdue and would make the selection process fairer while improving the quality of investigations.

With the exam approaching, many inspectors are balancing daily police duties with rigorous preparation. One inspector from Rohini admitted that the process has been challenging but remained hopeful. "We have done our best—now, it all depends on destiny," he said.

The government is considering expanding this system across all police stations in the future. As the historic exam date draws near, all eyes are on March 18, a day that could set a new benchmark for Delhi Police.
