New Delhi, Mar 31

A huge number of devotees, children, and aged people came to offer prayers at the iconic Jama Masjid on Monday during Eid-ul-Fitr, while the security was also tight.

To ensure the festival passed off peacefully, four police squads, along with paramilitary troops and top officials, were deployed at the Jama Masjid, said an officer present at the 17th-century mosque.

"We have put in place elaborate security arrangements for Eid. We trained for a few days, and the local residents cooperated with us, and thus the morning prayers were conducted without any hitches," the officer said.

In addition, a police squad was keeping track of social media to observe the online movements of key figures, he further added.

"Our team is studying the social media activity of influential leaders in order to gauge their sentiments and opinions," he clarified.

Following the prayers, most of the devotees helped the police in regulating the crowd and ensuring that everyone exited the mosque in an orderly manner to avoid any traffic congestions.

Abdul Qureshi, the chairman of the Delhi Minority Commission, was overjoyed by the peaceful festival celebrations.

"People of all religions are coming together with love and exchanging greetings. Eid is a day of peace. After fasting for a month, we are celebrating this day with joy," he said.
