Authorities in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, are working to complete DNA profiling for the victims of a devastating bus fire that occurred early Friday morning near Chinnatekur village. The tragic incident involved a collision between a private bus carrying 44 passengers and a two-wheeler, resulting in the death of 19 bus passengers and the motorbike rider. Many others on the bus managed to escape the blaze, but the victims’ bodies were severely charred, making identification extremely difficult.

Samples from all 19 bodies have been collected and sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory in Vijayawada. Officials expect the DNA profiling to take approximately 48 hours, with results likely by October 27. This process is crucial to accurately identify the victims and match them with their families. Out of the 19 bodies, relatives of 16 have already provided DNA samples, while two more families are expected to submit their samples soon. One body remains unclaimed and will be identified solely through DNA analysis.

The extent of the fire left most bodies unrecognizable, with only trunk sections remaining intact in several cases. All bodies are currently being preserved at Kurnool Government General Hospital. Authorities have made arrangements to transport the remains to the respective families as soon as DNA results are available.

Initial investigations indicate that several factors contributed to the intensity of the fire. Among the bus cargo were cell phones, which are known to be highly flammable. Officials noted that a consignment of cell phones in the luggage compartment aggravated the blaze. In addition, the bus’s battery and flammable furnishings added fuel to the fire, intensifying its destructive impact.

The accident has highlighted concerns regarding passenger safety and transport regulations. Authorities are emphasizing stricter monitoring of cargo and safety measures in buses to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Emergency response teams, including ambulances and vehicles for transporting the victims, have been mobilized promptly.

The local community is mourning the loss, with relatives and residents coming together in grief. While the DNA profiling process continues, officials are working to ensure that the victims’ identities are confirmed respectfully and accurately.

This incident underscores the risks associated with transporting flammable goods alongside passengers and the critical importance of safety compliance in public transport vehicles. Authorities are expected to release a detailed report after the DNA results confirm the identities of the victims.

Kurnool district is now focusing on providing support to families affected by the tragedy while taking measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
