Earthquake Tremors Shake Kolkata

Tremors were felt across parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, on Friday morning after a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh’s Narsingdi district, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The quake occurred at 10.08 am, with its epicentre located about 13 kilometres south southwest of Narsingdi. The IMD reported that the depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometres, a level at which tremors often travel widely and are strongly felt in neighbouring regions. In Kolkata and several surrounding districts, people rushed out of homes, offices and commercial buildings as the ground shook for a few seconds. Residents in multi storey buildings reported swaying furniture and vibrating windows. Many streets briefly filled with people who stepped out as a precaution before returning indoors once the tremors subsided.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from anywhere in West Bengal. Authorities monitored the situation, and officials said the tremors were short but noticeable across large parts of the southern region of the state. The earthquake’s impact was felt more strongly in Bangladesh, closer to the epicentre, but the IMD said the parameters indicated a typical shallow depth event capable of being felt in nearby Indian districts. Safety agencies advised residents to remain alert but confirmed that no further activity had been detected.

Friday’s tremors added to a series of mild to moderate quakes recorded in the region in recent years due to its proximity to active seismic zones extending across eastern India and Bangladesh.
