The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation into a video circulating online that appears to show England opener Ben Duckett intoxicated and struggling to return to the team hotel during a break in Noosa. The trip came between the second and third Tests of the ongoing Ashes series, following England’s heavy loss in Brisbane.
The footage emerged on social media hours after ECB Managing Director Rob Key confirmed that the Noosa trip would be reviewed. Key clarified that the four-day break, organised by head coach Brendon McCullum, was meant for player relaxation rather than a holiday. Several players took time off, with no training scheduled during the trip.
Key admitted that he initially believed players had behaved appropriately, but reports comparing the trip to a “stag do” prompted closer scrutiny. Speaking at the MCG, he said, “If players went out and drank excessively, we will look into it. Excessive alcohol consumption is unacceptable at any stage.” He added that casual drinks during downtime were not an issue but anything beyond that would be reviewed.
The ECB issued a statement acknowledging social media content but said it would not comment further until facts were verified. Key emphasized support for players needing assistance and confirmed that standard disciplinary processes would apply if conduct fell short of expectations.
Duckett, 31, has struggled in the series, scoring just 97 runs in six innings, with a highest score of 29. He has previously faced ECB disciplinary action, including a fine and suspension in 2017 for inappropriate behavior during a tour to Australia.
England, chasing 435 in the Adelaide Test, were dismissed for 352, extending their wait for an Ashes series win in Australia since 2010-11. The ECB’s probe is likely to focus on maintaining team discipline while balancing player welfare.
