A day after police were attacked during a protest against Waqf Act in Tripura's Unakoti district of Kailashahar, a local court remanded eight accused to 10-day judicial custody Sunday.
Unakoti SP P Sudambika R said a search operation was underway for others involved in the attack. Additional forces have been stationed throughout the region to ensure there is no further escalation.
At least 18 police, including an SDPO and a few inspectors, were hurt during the attack. About 60 protesters were injured too, with a couple requiring hospitalization. One of the protesters, Jahangir (51), is in a critical condition.
The Muslim-majority bordering subdivisions of Kailashahar and Sonamura (Sepahijala district) saw violent protests, leading the police to use a lathi charge.
Another protest was held in Sonamura, where thousands marched from the old motor stand of the town to Rabindra Chaumuhani, where a meeting was organized to condemn the Act.
