Faf du Plessis’ IPL chapter has come to an end. Ahead of next month’s IPL mini auction, the South African star has withdrawn his name. He will now be seen playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) next season. For this reason, the former South Africa captain pulled out of the IPL just two weeks before the auction in Abu Dhabi. The 41-year-old confirmed the decision in a statement on social media.
He made his Test debut in 2012, scoring a century in his first match becoming the fourth South African to do so. That same year, Chennai Super Kings signed him. He played for CSK until 2015, then joined Rising Pune Supergiant, and returned to CSK in 2018, staying for three more years. From 2022 to 2024, he played for RCB and also captained the side.
In 154 IPL matches, du Plessis scored 4,773 runs at an average of 35.10, including 39 fifties. He had a brilliant 2023 season, scoring 730 runs in 14 matches at an average of 56.15. In 2021, he played a crucial role in CSK’s title win, finishing with 633 runs second only to teammate Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Orange Cap race.
On Saturday, du Plessis wrote on social media:
“After 14 IPL seasons, I have decided not to enter this year's auction. The IPL will always be a big part of my cricketing journey. I was fortunate to play with world-class teammates. The emotion of playing there is unmatched. But this year, I’ve chosen a new challenge. I will be playing in the upcoming PSL new country, new environment, new challenge. I’m eagerly looking forward to Pakistan’s hospitality.”
