Director Aditya Dhar’s ambitious film Dhurandhar has emerged as one of the biggest cinematic successes in recent years, grossing over ₹1,300 crore worldwide, nearly five times its reported budget of ₹280 crore. Released in theatres on December 5, 2025, the film’s massive box office performance has surprised industry insiders and cemented its position as a major blockbuster.
Interestingly, Dhurandhar was initially conceived as a web series before being developed into a full-length feature film. According to sources close to the production, the director was considering a series format due to the expansive storyline. However, the scale, visual ambition, and confidence in the narrative ultimately led the makers to present it as a theatrical film instead.
The film stars Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali Mazari, a mysterious outsider who arrives in Lyari, a locality in Karachi, Pakistan, and gradually rises through the ranks of a powerful gang led by Rehman Dakait, played by Akshaye Khanna. The story blends action, drama, and political intrigue, contributing to its widespread appeal.
Much of the film’s Lyari setting was recreated on a massive six-acre set in Bangkok, Thailand, reflecting the film’s grand production scale. Additional filming locations included Amritsar, Mumbai, and Ladakh, adding authenticity and visual richness to the story.
Following its theatrical success, Dhurandhar premiered on Netflix on January 30, 2026, which further boosted its popularity among global audiences. The film’s OTT release sparked renewed discussions and attracted new viewers.
The makers are now preparing for the sequel, titled “Dhurandhar: The Revenge,” scheduled for release on March 19, 2026. Actress Yami Gautam is set to play a key role in the upcoming installment.
With its record-breaking earnings, strong storyline, and growing fan anticipation for the sequel, Dhurandhar has established itself as one of the most influential and commercially successful Indian films of the decade.
