India’s senior selection committee has announced the 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, set to be held in India and Sri Lanka from February 7. In a surprising move, Shubman Gill, who was recently recalled as vice-captain for the Asia Cup, has been left out.
The committee, chaired by former pacer Ajit Agarkar at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, confirmed that Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan will be part of the squad. Axar Patel has been reinstated as vice-captain, providing experience and balance to the team’s composition. The selectors emphasized a strategy focusing on players who can adapt to different conditions and offer versatility in batting and bowling.
Gill’s exclusion comes despite his recent performances and leadership role in the Asia Cup. Agarkar commented that while Gill is a quality player, he is “a bit short of runs at the moment,” which influenced the decision. The squad also reflects a strategic choice for a reserve wicketkeeper who can bat at the top of the order, leading to the omission of Jitesh.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side, with the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia present at the announcement. The squad is expected to play five T20Is against New Zealand before the World Cup, giving the team a chance to fine-tune combinations and test player form.
The selectors’ decisions have generated debate among fans, with many noting the balance between youth and experience. India will aim to defend its T20 World Cup title, relying on a combination of explosive batting, spin options, and fast-bowling depth. The final squad demonstrates a focus on adaptable players who can perform under pressure and deliver in crucial moments during the tournament.
With the World Cup approaching, all eyes will be on India’s top-order and bowling strategies as they prepare to compete on home soil and in Sri Lanka.
