Indian chess star Arjun Erigaisi delivered a statement performance at the FIDE World Blitz Championship 2025 in Doha, defeating world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in a tense, high-pressure encounter that quickly became one of the tournament’s most talked-about moments. While Erigaisi impressed with his calm demeanor and sharp endgame play, it was Carlsen’s visible frustration after the loss that grabbed global attention.
The dramatic Round 9 clash saw both players running dangerously low on time. Erigaisi had just nine seconds left on his clock, while Carlsen was down to three. As the Norwegian grandmaster attempted to make a crucial queen move, the piece slipped from his hand and flew off the board. By the time he recovered and placed it back, his clock had run out, handing Erigaisi a stunning victory. Unable to hide his anger, Carlsen slammed his fist on the table, causing it to shake, a moment that went viral on social media.
In sharp contrast, Erigaisi calmly rearranged the board and maintained perfect etiquette, drawing widespread praise. Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra lauded the young Indian on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “To calmly rearrange the board and show perfect etiquette after a high-tension win against the GOAT is class personified. Grace is always a winner.”
Erigaisi’s win over Carlsen was not a one-off highlight. He went on to defeat Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov and drew three other games, finishing Day 1 as joint leader with 10 points from 13 games, alongside Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Fabiano Caruana. Six players trail closely on 9.5 points, while defending co-champions Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi sit slightly behind on 9.
The incident also revived memories of Carlsen’s earlier outburst against India’s D. Gukesh this year, again sparking debate over sportsmanship under pressure. For Indian chess fans, however, the spotlight firmly belonged to Arjun Erigaisi whose composure, confidence and class marked him as a true champion in the making.
