The tragic death of 23-year-old Sahil Dhaneshra in Dwarka, Delhi, has left a grieving mother appealing to parents across the country to take precautions when it comes to underage driving. Sahil, who rode his Yamaha R15 motorcycle, was struck by a Scorpio SUV near Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management on February 3 at around 11:50 am, dying instantly at the scene. The driver, 17-year-old Akshatra Singh, was immediately detained, and police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including rash driving and negligence leading to death.
Sahil’s mother, Inna Maakan, raised her only child on her own and worked tirelessly to ensure he received a proper education. Speaking to NDTV, she described her son’s death as a cautionary tale for all parents. “Let my son's sacrifice be a lesson to everyone. Secure your children's future. If people don't learn now, more mothers will keep losing their children,” she said, urging parents not to hand over vehicles to minors who are legally ineligible for a driving license.
Following the incident, the teenager was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to an observation home. On February 10, he was granted interim bail to appear for his Class 10 board examinations. His lawyer, Lal Singh Thakur, stated that the teen is struggling to focus on his exams and has been receiving threats and abusive calls from the public, intensifying the family’s distress.
