Gujarat Salt Reaches Kashmir by Rail

The first freight train carrying industrial salt from Gujarat has successfully reached south Kashmir, marking a significant milestone for freight transportation in the Jammu division of Northern Railway. The train, comprising 21 wagons and transporting 1,350 tonnes of industrial salt from Kharaghoda Goods Shed in Gujarat, arrived at the Anantnag goods shed, enhancing the region’s supply chain capabilities.

The industrial salt is primarily used in industries such as tanning, pulp, soap, and brick kilns. Rail transport is expected to provide a more reliable and cost-effective alternative to road transport, especially during adverse weather conditions when roads are often disrupted. This development aims to ensure a steady supply of essential commodities to the Valley while reducing logistics costs and travel time.

In recent months, Kashmir has seen increased freight activity, including the transport of apples to Delhi and the movement of vehicles and other goods into the region. The arrival of the salt consignment signals a broader push by Indian Railways to expand its logistics network in the Union Territory. The initiative is expected to facilitate smoother commercial and industrial operations, supporting both local businesses and larger industrial needs.

Officials anticipate that such freight operations will become more frequent, enabling efficient movement of essential goods across the region. The expansion of rail-based freight transport is seen as a step toward strengthening Kashmir’s supply chain resilience and reducing dependency on road transport during harsh weather conditions.

This development highlights Indian Railways’ continued focus on enhancing connectivity, boosting trade, and supporting industrial growth in Jammu and Kashmir. The new logistics route is poised to play a key role in the region’s economic activity while providing an efficient and reliable transportation option for essential commodities.
