Netflix’s Stranger Things may be set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, but the inspiration behind its eerie labs and secret experiments has real-world links to Montauk, New York. For years, fans have speculated whether the hit series draws from true events, and several cast interviews and conspiracy theories suggest that it does.
The Duffer Brothers originally pitched Stranger Things under the title Montauk. The story was meant to be rooted in Camp Hero, a decommissioned military base located in Montauk, within the town of East Hampton. The site, now part of Camp Hero State Park, has long been associated with the controversial “Montauk Project.”
According to conspiracy theorists, Camp Hero was once home to secret Cold War–era experiments conducted by the US military. These alleged experiments involved psychological warfare, mind control, and even time travel. Actor Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, once stated in an interview that the show was inspired by rumours surrounding Montauk, where secret human experiments were said to have taken place.
Much of the lore surrounding the Montauk Project comes from books written in the 1980s by Preston Nichols and Peter Moon. Nichols claimed to have recovered repressed memories of being forced to participate in experiments involving teleportation, mind manipulation, and contact with extraterrestrial life. While these claims have been widely dismissed as fictional, locals insist that some aspects of the stories may be grounded in truth.
Adding to the mystery are the abandoned military structures at Camp Hero, including sealed bunkers, underground tunnels, and a massive Cold War–era radar system. Conspiracy theorists believe these locations mirror the secret lab and Upside Down gateways seen in Stranger Things.
Today, Camp Hero State Park is open to tourists and adventure seekers, though entry into the old military buildings remains strictly prohibited. Whether fact or fiction, Montauk’s unsettling history continues to fuel the haunting legacy behind one of Netflix’s most popular series.
