A 21-year-old science student and part-time YouTuber, Bonu Komali, was found dead at her rented apartment in Hyderabad on Monday, shortly after sending an emotional message to her mother living abroad.
According to police, Komali, originally from Visakhapatnam, had been living alone in Hyderabad for nearly 11 months while pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at a private college. Alongside her studies, she also created lifestyle and personal content on YouTube as a part-time creator.
Investigators said that in the early hours of Monday, Komali sent a text message to her mother, B Satya Varalakshmi, who currently works in Kuwait. In the message, she reportedly wrote, “I love you mummy so much” and asked her mother to take care of her younger brother.
After receiving the message, her mother tried calling her repeatedly but could not reach her as the phone was switched off. Growing concerned, she contacted one of Komali’s friends in Hyderabad and requested them to check on her.
Later in the afternoon, the friend visited Komali’s apartment. When repeated knocks on the door went unanswered, the latch of the flat was broken open. Inside, Komali was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
Police officer Ch Venkanna said the incident came to light around 3 pm. “When there was no response despite repeated knocking, the door latch was broken. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan,” the officer said.
A ladder and a saree were reportedly recovered from the scene, which police believe were used in the act.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Komali had been under emotional distress due to a prolonged relationship dispute. According to investigators, she had been in a relationship for nearly three years with a 27-year-old software engineer who was also involved in creating online content. However, the couple had recently parted ways.
Police also revealed that Komali had previously attempted suicide around six months ago, indicating that she might have been dealing with emotional struggles for some time.
Her body was later shifted to Osmania General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities have registered a case of suspicious death and launched a detailed investigation. Police are currently examining phone records, digital evidence, and statements from friends and neighbours to understand the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
