India’s Under-19 team began their Youth World Cup campaign in Namibia with an emphatic performance on Thursday. Led by Ayush Mhatre, the Indian colts showcased all-round dominance with both bat and ball. Bowling first, the Indian attack bundled out the United States for a modest total. However, in the rain-interrupted match, India’s batting line-up did face some trouble while chasing a small target. Eventually, Ayush Mhatre’s side started their World Cup journey with a win over the USA.
Interestingly, all 11 players in the USA team who took the field against India had Indian roots. From captain Utkarsh Srivastava to top scorer Nitish Sudini, the American side featured several players of Indian origin.
After winning the toss, Indian captain Ayush opted to bowl first. The decision paid immediate dividends as the Indian bowlers reduced the USA batters to near surrender from the very beginning. Opener Amarinder Gill was dismissed in the second over, and none of the American batters managed to build a substantial innings. Nitish was the lone bright spot with a top score of 36.
The chief architect of the USA batting collapse was Indian pacer Henil Patel. The young speedster delivered a sensational spell, picking up five wickets in seven overs while conceding just 16 runs. From the opposition captain and opener to the tail-enders, all fell victim to Henil’s fiery bowling. Vaibhav also chipped in with a wicket. The USA innings was wrapped up for just 107 runs.
Chasing the low target, India’s innings was repeatedly interrupted by rain, leading to long stoppages in play. Despite picking up a wicket earlier, Vaibhav failed with the bat, scoring only 2 runs, while captain Ayush managed 19. Abhigyan Kundu then steadied the innings, remaining unbeaten on 42 and guiding the chase.
Due to rain, the Duckworth–Lewis method was applied, revising India’s target to 96. India comfortably reached the target in just 17.2 overs to seal a convincing victory and kick off their Youth World Cup campaign on a winning note.
