The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued an urgent advisory for Indian citizens following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). His death during a major military operation has triggered escalating violence and security unrest in several regions of Mexico, prompting the embassy to take precautionary steps for the safety of its nationals.
In its advisory posted on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy urged Indian nationals in multiple Mexican states – including parts of Jalisco (such as Puerto Vallarta, Chapala, and Guadalajara), Tamaulipas (including Reynosa), as well as Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León – to shelter in place and stay indoors until the situation stabilizes. The advisory specifically noted ongoing security operations, road blockages and criminal activity linked to the unrest.
Citizens were advised to take a range of safety precautions, such as avoiding areas where law enforcement operations are underway, steering clear of crowds, minimizing unnecessary movement, and monitoring local media for real‑time updates. The embassy also reminded residents to comply with local authorities’ instructions and to call 911 in case of emergency.
To assist Indian nationals during this period of heightened tension, the embassy has provided a dedicated helpline number (+52 55 4847 7539). Indians in Mexico have been encouraged to stay in communication with family and friends, keeping them informed of their safety and location.
The advisory comes amid reports of retaliatory violence by cartel affiliates following El Mencho’s death, underscoring the volatility in affected regions and the need for visitors and residents to exercise high levels of caution.
