The Indian Navy is set to commission the advanced anti-submarine warfare vessel INS Anjadip, nicknamed the ‘Dolphin Hunter’, in Chennai later this week. The induction marks a significant enhancement of the Navy’s capabilities in undersea warfare and coastal security.
INS Anjadip is part of the Navy’s Kamorta-class corvettes, designed for stealth operations, anti-submarine missions, and maritime patrols. Equipped with state-of-the-art sonar systems, torpedoes, and missile systems, the ship is expected to strengthen India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
The commissioning ceremony in Chennai Port will be attended by senior naval officials, dignitaries, and representatives of the Ministry of Defence. The vessel has undergone extensive sea trials, demonstrating its maneuverability, detection systems, and combat readiness under diverse maritime conditions.
INS Anjadip, named after an island in the Arabian Sea, will be deployed primarily along India’s eastern seaboard to monitor submarine movements, safeguard shipping lanes, and enhance maritime surveillance. The ship also adds to the Navy’s network-centric warfare capabilities, allowing real-time coordination with other naval assets and Indian Coast Guard units.
According to naval sources, the commissioning of INS Anjadip reflects India’s focus on modernizing its fleet and enhancing deterrence amid increasing maritime activity in the region. It is part of a broader strategy to boost indigenous shipbuilding, with over 70% of the vessel constructed in India.
The ship’s advanced sonar and anti-submarine warfare systems make it a formidable asset against potential underwater threats, including submarines operating in the Indian Ocean. Its induction complements India’s existing fleet of corvettes, frigates, and destroyers, providing multi-layered maritime defense capabilities.
The Navy has also emphasized the role of INS Anjadip in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions, capable of providing rapid response during natural disasters or maritime emergencies.
With commissioning of the ‘Dolphin Hunter’, the Indian Navy continues to assert its blue-water capabilities while enhancing the security of India’s coastline and exclusive economic zone. The induction is expected to further strengthen the eastern naval command and maintain a credible deterrence posture in the region.
