Hundreds of Indian students studying in Tehran, including many from Kashmir, have been shifted to the Iranian city of Qom as a precautionary measure amid rising security concerns in Iran. The relocation was carried out by the Embassy of India in Tehran after the situation in the capital deteriorated due to escalating tensions and military strikes in the region.
Officials said the students were moved in buses arranged by the embassy to safer locations outside Tehran. Qom, located about 140 kilometres south of the capital, has been identified as a relatively safer area where temporary accommodation and support have been arranged for the students.
According to student groups and officials, more than 200 Indian students studying in various universities in Tehran have already been relocated. A large number of them are medical students enrolled in institutions such as Tehran University of Medical Sciences and other prominent universities in the Iranian capital. Many of these students belong to Jammu and Kashmir, which has one of the largest groups of Indian students pursuing medical education in Iran.
The relocation comes after the Indian government issued advisories asking nationals in Iran to exercise caution and limit unnecessary movement due to the worsening security situation. Authorities have urged Indian citizens to remain indoors, stay alert and follow updates from the Indian mission in Tehran.
While the relocation has brought some relief, families of the students in Kashmir remain anxious. Several parents have appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs and the central government to arrange a complete evacuation of their children from Iran. They say the ongoing tensions in the region have created fear and uncertainty, prompting urgent calls for the students to be brought back home.
Parents have also approached local authorities and student associations seeking government intervention. Many families say they are in constant contact with their children through phone calls and messaging apps but remain worried about their safety as the situation in the region continues to evolve.
Student organisations monitoring the situation have said the relocation to Qom is only a temporary safety measure. They have urged the government to prepare contingency plans for evacuation if the conflict escalates further.
Officials from the Indian mission have assured that they are closely monitoring developments and remain in touch with students across Iran. They have said all possible assistance is being extended to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian nationals in the country.
Meanwhile, parents in Kashmir continue to press for swift evacuation arrangements, hoping their children can safely return to India as tensions in the Middle East remain uncertain.
