A 30-year-old Indian national, Himanshi Khurana, was found murdered in Canada’s Toronto last week, prompting a homicide investigation by local authorities. Toronto Police have identified the case as a suspected incident of intimate partner violence and are searching for a 32-year-old man, Abdul Ghafoori, in connection with the killing.
According to a statement issued by the Toronto Police Service, officers responded to a missing person call late on the night of December 19 in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area. After an overnight search, police located the woman’s body inside a residence at around 6.30 am on Saturday, December 20. The death was subsequently classified as a homicide, and the Homicide Unit took over the investigation.
The victim was identified as Himanshi Khurana, a Toronto resident. Police officials said preliminary findings indicate that the victim and the suspect knew each other. Media reports citing police sources have suggested that the two were in an intimate partner relationship, leading investigators to suspect the crime may be linked to domestic or relationship-related violence.
Toronto Police have issued a public appeal for information, releasing an image of the suspect and urging anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to contact authorities immediately. “We are asking members of the public to assist us in locating the suspect,” a police spokesperson said, adding that public cooperation could be crucial to the investigation.
Images released by police matched photographs shared earlier on social media by a user bearing the same name as the victim, where she described herself as a Toronto-based digital creator.
The Indian Consulate in Toronto expressed deep shock and sorrow over the incident. In an official statement, the Consulate said it was closely coordinating with Canadian authorities and providing all possible assistance to the victim’s family during this difficult time.
The case has sparked concern among the Indian community in Canada, with calls for swift justice and stronger safeguards against intimate partner violence.
