A tragic family dispute in the US state of Georgia has claimed the lives of four people, including an Indian woman and three of her relatives. The incident occurred early Friday morning in Lawrenceville city, where police found four adults dead from gunshot wounds inside a residential home.
According to local authorities and the Consulate General of India in Atlanta, the alleged shooter has been identified as 51-year-old Vijay Kumar of Atlanta. He has been arrested and is facing multiple serious charges, including four counts each of felony murder, malice murder and aggravated assault, along with charges related to cruelty to children.
The victims were identified as Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra (43), Gourav Kumar (33), Nidhi Chander (37), and Harish Chander (38). Police said the shooting followed an alleged domestic argument, though the exact motive is still under investigation.
Officers responded to an emergency call at around 2.30 am at a residence on Brook Ivy Court. On arrival, they discovered the bodies of the four adults inside the house. Investigators confirmed that all had suffered fatal gunshot injuries.
Three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting. In a remarkable act of presence of mind, the children hid in a closet to protect themselves. One of the children managed to call 911, providing crucial information that helped police reach the scene within minutes. The children were not injured and have since been placed in the care of a family member.
The Indian Consulate in Atlanta expressed deep grief over the incident and said it is extending all possible assistance to the bereaved family. In a statement posted on social media, the mission said it is in touch with local authorities and offering support to those affected.
The case has sent shockwaves through the local community and the Indian diaspora, as investigations continue to determine the full circumstances behind the deadly shooting.
