India Triumphs Over New Zealand in ICC Women's World Cup
Following a streak of three losses, the Indian women's cricket team achieved a remarkable 53-run victory (DLS method) against New Zealand, securing their place in the semifinals of the ICC Women's World Cup.
The atmosphere at DY Patil Stadium, which the Indian coach highlighted before the match, significantly boosted the performance of the Indian batters. Openers Pratika Rawal (122 runs off 134 balls, including 13 fours and 2 sixes) and Smriti Mandhana (109 runs off 95 balls, with 10 boundaries and 4 sixes) delivered an explosive performance. They set a record for the highest opening partnership (212 runs) in World Cup history for India, despite starting the tournament slowly.
From a modest 40 runs in the first 10 overs, the Indian team surged to a total of 340 runs (in the revised 49 overs), marking the highest score ever recorded in the tournament. However, due to rain interruptions, the target was adjusted to 325 runs from 44 overs. The previous record was 330 runs against Australia earlier in the tournament.
Jemimah Rodrigues, who had been sidelined in the previous match, regained momentum after the 34th over, scoring 76 runs off 55 balls with 11 boundaries, helping India reach a formidable total.
New Zealand, having faced two washed-out matches due to rain, began their chase after a 90-minute delay. Unfortunately, they lost both openers, Georgia Plimmer (30) and Suzie Bates (1), within the first 10 overs.
Bates was dismissed by Kranti Gaud, while Renuka Singh took out Plimmer. The experienced pacer then struck again, bowling out captain Sophie Devine (6), leaving New Zealand struggling at 59/3.
Despite some crucial partnerships, New Zealand could not overcome the daunting target. Amelia Kerr (45) and Brooke Halliday (81) formed a 56-run partnership before Sneh Rana dismissed Kerr.
Maddy Green added a 39-run partnership with Halliday before being removed by Rawal, further diminishing New Zealand's hopes at 154/5. Halliday and Isabella Gaze (65 not out) managed to extend the innings with a 72-run partnership, but Shree Charani's dismissal of Halliday effectively sealed the match.
Final scores: India: 340/3 in 49 overs (Rawal 122, Mandhana 109, Rodrigues 76); New Zealand: 271/8 in 44 overs (Halliday 81, Gaze 65*; Renuka 2/25)
