In a major milestone for Indian Railways, the first-ever Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to operate between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal. Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the development on New Year’s Day, highlighting that all trials, testing, and certifications for the train have been successfully completed. The inaugural journey will be flagged off by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi later this month.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train aims to provide a safe, comfortable, and high-quality overnight travel experience. Scheduled to depart in the evening and reach its destination by the next morning, the train will serve passengers across Assam’s Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon districts, as well as West Bengal’s Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah districts.
The train features 16 modern coaches, including 11 three-tier AC, four two-tier AC, and one first-class AC coach, accommodating approximately 823 passengers. A newly designed bogie with advanced suspension ensures enhanced ride comfort, while ergonomically designed interiors and ladders prioritize passenger safety.
Passengers will also enjoy region-specific culinary offerings, with authentic Assamese cuisine on trains from Guwahati and traditional Bengali delicacies on trains from Howrah, making the journey culturally enriching as well as comfortable.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train boasts several modern features, including a semi-high-speed design capable of 180 kmph, automatic doors with vestibules for smooth movement, and improved noise reduction. Safety has been prioritized with KAVACH installation, disinfectant technology, enhanced fire detection and suppression systems, emergency communication units, and CCTV surveillance in all coaches. Special arrangements have been made for Divyangjans to ensure an inclusive travel experience.
This launch marks a new era in India’s railway network, combining speed, comfort, and technology for overnight travel. Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that 2026 would see significant passenger-centric reforms and innovations in Indian Railways, further strengthening connectivity and improving the overall travel experience for millions.
