Israel Releases Nearly 2,000 Palestinian Prisoners in Major Swap

Israel has released nearly 2,000 Palestinian political prisoners and detainees in a major prisoner exchange with Hamas. The release comes after a deal in which 20 living and 28 deceased Israeli captives held in Gaza were exchanged for Palestinian prisoners. Palestinians gathered in large numbers in Ramallah and Gaza to welcome back those freed, marking a rare moment of celebration amid ongoing tensions.

Among those released were 250 Palestinian political prisoners serving long or life sentences. Most of these are from the West Bank, with a majority affiliated with Fatah, the party that governs parts of the West Bank. Sixty-five prisoners belonged to Hamas, while the remaining were from smaller political groups. In addition, Israel freed 1,718 Palestinians who had been forcibly disappeared during its war on Gaza over the last two years. The released included five children under 18 and two women. Many of those held in Gaza suffered harsh conditions, including beatings, medical neglect, and starvation. Human rights groups report that 77 prisoners have died in Israeli custody since October 7, 2023.

Despite the scale of the release, thousands of Palestinians remain in detention. Human rights groups report that the total number of Palestinian captives has grown from 5,200 to over 11,000 since October 2023, including 400 children. Experts warn that Israel often re-arrests Palestinians shortly after their release, making the freedom of prisoners uncertain.

Of the 250 high-level political prisoners, 96 returned to the West Bank and Gaza, while 154 were deported to third countries, with some reportedly sent to Egypt. The full release of all prisoners may depend on Israel receiving the bodies of 28 deceased Israeli captives, which Hamas is still attempting to locate.

Even as families welcomed back loved ones, they were warned not to celebrate openly or display Palestinian flags in occupied areas. Many remain anxious about prominent leaders like Marwan Barghouti and Ahmed Saadat, who were not included in the release, and about other prisoners subjected to severe torture and confinement.

While the prisoner swap has brought temporary relief and joy for thousands of Palestinians, it highlights the ongoing challenges and deep divisions in the Israel-Palestine conflict. For many, the hope is that this exchange could mark a step toward ending the violence and restoring some stability to the region.
