External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Kuala Lumpur on Monday on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit, focusing on strengthening India-U.S. relations and reviewing key regional and global developments.

The discussions took place as both nations move closer to finalizing a long-awaited bilateral trade deal. According to officials, the agreement’s first phase is nearing completion, with five rounds of negotiations already concluded. The deal is expected to boost trade, technology cooperation, and strategic investments between the two democracies.

The meeting also underscored the shared commitment of India and the United States to ensuring stability in the Indo-Pacific region. Both leaders exchanged views on ongoing geopolitical challenges, regional connectivity, and the role of ASEAN in maintaining a free and open regional order.

The engagement between Jaishankar and Rubio comes at a crucial time as Washington and New Delhi look to deepen cooperation beyond trade  including defense, clean energy, and digital infrastructure. Observers see the meeting as a signal of continuity in the growing strategic partnership between the two countries, regardless of leadership changes in the U.S. administration.

On Sunday, Jaishankar held separate discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, and Thailand’s Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow. These meetings aimed to strengthen India’s outreach in Southeast Asia under the “Act East” policy.

Malaysia, serving as the current ASEAN chair, is hosting the summit and related events in Kuala Lumpur. The 11-member bloc remains one of the most influential regional groupings, with dialogue partnerships that include India, the United States, China, Japan, and Australia.

The series of meetings highlighted India’s growing engagement with ASEAN and its partners amid evolving global alignments.
