Producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions has, for the first time, spoken publicly about the censor-court controversy surrounding Thalapathy Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan. Calling the situation “emotional and extremely difficult,” the producer said the team firmly believes that Vijay deserves a dignified farewell after decades of love and support from fans.
In a video statement, Venkat explained that Jana Nayagan was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on December 18, 2025. After the examining committee reviewed the film, the makers received an email on December 22 stating that the film would be granted a UA 16+ certificate, subject to a few modifications. The team implemented the suggested changes and resubmitted the film, expecting formal certification.
However, days before the planned January 9 release, the producers were informed on January 5, 2026, that the film had been referred to a revising committee following a single complaint. With very little time left and no clarity on the complainant, the makers approached the Madras High Court seeking relief.
Venkat said the uncertainty deeply affected everyone associated with the project. He also apologised to fans, distributors, and exhibitors, stressing that the delay was beyond the team’s control.
The Madras High Court initially ordered the CBFC to issue a UA certificate after required changes, while also criticising the board for entertaining complaints, calling it a “dangerous trend.” However, the Censor Board later appealed the order, arguing that it had the right to refer the film to a revising committee. Senior advocates, including Mukul Rohatgi and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, represented the respective sides.
As of now, Jana Nayagan has no confirmed release date before January 21, with the matter likely to be heard after the Pongal holidays. The film’s team is also considering approaching the Supreme Court.
