A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday evening, prompting immediate tsunami warnings and emergency responses across multiple prefectures. The quake, detected by the United States Geological Survey, occurred at a depth of just over 53 kilometers at 14:15 UTC, with its epicentre located around 73 kilometers east-northeast of Misawa in northern Japan.
The Japan Meteorological Agency swiftly issued tsunami alerts for Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, cautioning residents to move to higher ground. Initial reports indicated a 40-centimetre tsunami along parts of the coast, though authorities warned that waves as high as three meters could still reach shoreline areas. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre added that hazardous waves were possible within a 1,000-kilometre radius, including vulnerable coastal regions of Japan and parts of Russia.
The tremor was strong enough to be felt across a wide stretch of Japan’s north and east. In immediate response, East Japan Railway temporarily halted several train services to ensure passenger safety while inspections were carried out. Local authorities began coordinating evacuation orders, and disaster management teams were placed on high alert. No major casualties or structural collapses were initially reported, but assessments continued through the evening.
Japan, one of the world’s most earthquake-prone nations, sits on the volatile Ring of Fire, a region known for its intense seismic and volcanic activity. The country experiences nearly 20 percent of all global earthquakes above magnitude 6.0. Monday’s quake revived memories of past major disasters, including the 2011 megathrust quake and tsunami that devastated large parts of the country.
As aftershocks continued, authorities urged residents to remain alert, stay tuned to official advisories and avoid coastal zones until all tsunami warnings were lifted. Emergency teams and meteorological agencies continued to monitor the situation closely, ensuring communities received timely updates as the night progressed.
