Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has advised the BCCI and Indian team management to allow Virat Kohli to prepare for matches in his own way, emphasizing that the star batter’s performance speaks for itself. Kaif’s comments come amid reports that the BCCI has been encouraging senior players like Kohli and Rohit Sharma to participate in domestic cricket to maintain match rhythm.
Kohli, 37, is currently enjoying a purple patch in ODI cricket, having scored three centuries and a 93 in his last seven matches. His consistent form has seen him reclaim the No. 1 spot in the ICC ODI batting rankings and increase his ODI centuries tally to 54.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif said, “Virat Kohli came to the match, made a hundred, and then went back to London. Now, whether he plays the Vijay Hazare Trophy or not, how does it matter? Why do we need to tell him to play if he is coming and scoring centuries for India?”
Kaif added that Kohli should not be subjected to special rules or instructions, highlighting the batter’s experience and dedication. “Are we going to teach Virat Kohli how to prepare? He carries India in his heart. If runs aren’t coming, they will come themselves. He knows exactly what is needed to win matches for India. Please keep your wisdom inside your pocket, or lend it to someone who needs it,” Kaif said.
The former cricketer’s remarks come after Kohli’s excellent performance in two Vijay Hazare Trophy games for Delhi in December 2025, where he scored a century. Kaif’s message is clear: as long as Kohli continues to perform at the highest level, the BCCI should trust his preparation methods and give him the freedom to manage his game the way he deems fit.
