Rishab Shetty's highly anticipated prequel has taken the Indian box office by storm, crossing the ₹336 crore mark in just eight days and claiming the position of 2025's second highest-grossing film.

The multilingual epic, released in Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam, has exceeded all expectations since its theatrical debut. After a massive opening day collection of ₹61.85 crore, the film has maintained impressive momentum throughout its first week, despite the usual weekday dips.

What makes this achievement particularly remarkable is how quickly the film climbed the charts. Starting at the 11th position, it rapidly ascended to fourth place before settling into the coveted second spot. The film has now surpassed not only its predecessor 'Kantara', which earned approximately ₹309 crore, but also this year's earlier blockbuster 'Saiyaara' starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, which collected ₹329.7 crore.

Currently, only Vicky Kaushal's 'Chhaava', with its impressive ₹601.54 crore collection, stands ahead of Shetty's directorial venture.

The film's success story is one of strategic release and organic buzz. Industry insiders reveal that just a week before release, anticipation was modest at best. However, advance bookings exploded in the final 24 hours, raking in approximately ₹30 crore before the first show even began.

The day-wise breakdown reveals a fascinating pattern: after the opening day's ₹61.85 crore, the film collected ₹45.4 crore on day two, jumped to ₹55 crore on Saturday, and peaked at ₹63 crore on Sunday. The inevitable Monday crash saw collections halve to ₹31.25 crore, but Tuesday witnessed a recovery to ₹34.25 crore. The film earned ₹25.25 crore on Wednesday and ₹20.50 crore on Thursday.

Regional performance has been particularly strong. The Kannada version maintains a solid 45.69% occupancy, with tier-2 and tier-3 cities like Mysuru, Shivamogga, and Kundapura recording occupancy rates exceeding 70%. The Hindi version, however, contributes the lion's share of daily collections, pulling in approximately ₹6.75-7.25 crore on day eight alone.

Director Rishab Shetty, who also plays the lead role, has remained humble about his film's success. Responding to praise from veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, Shetty called himself "a kid in the film industry," attributing his work to the inspiration drawn from cinema legends.

The film features strong performances from Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram in pivotal roles. In a move that has further excited fans, the makers announced a third chapter during the climax of this prequel.

With the crucial second weekend beginning today, industry analysts believe the ₹500 crore milestone is well within reach if the film sustains its current buzz. Given its extraordinary first-week performance, 'Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1' has firmly established itself as one of the most significant Indian releases of the year, proving once again that compelling storytelling transcends language barriers.
