India’s domestic one-day season is set for a major boost as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli prepare to return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The star batters, who now focus primarily on Test and ODI formats, have reportedly confirmed their availability for the tournament marking a rare appearance in domestic white-ball cricket.
A recent RevSportz report sparked debate by suggesting the pair might have been nudged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to feature in the tournament to keep their ODI careers active. However, a senior BCCI official firmly dismissed such speculation, stating that both Rohit and Kohli chose to participate entirely on their own. “They have decided, it’s their decision,” the official clarified, underlining that there was no directive from the board.
In the past year, both Ajit Agarkar, chairman of selectors, and head coach Gautam Gambhir have emphasised the importance of domestic cricket, urging senior players to return whenever schedules allow. It was this broader push that saw both Rohit and Kohli participate in the Ranji Trophy earlier this year after the disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour.
Despite speculation about long-term plans, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup still some distance away, Gambhir has reiterated that both veterans remain crucial to India’s 50-over setup. “They are world-class players and their experience is important in the dressing room. Hopefully they can continue doing the same,” he said after India’s 2–1 ODI series win over South Africa.
Rohit and Kohli have continued to dominate India’s ODI batting charts, and their return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy not only strengthens the competition but also offers valuable preparation for the busy 2026 international calendar. Their decision is expected to draw attention to the tournament, giving a significant platform to younger domestic talents sharing the stage with two of India’s greatest modern cricketers.
